Of course not following directions voids warranty, violates code and is unsafe - in the case of electrical increasing risk of fire or electrocution. Other radiant heaters I installed as a professional have not said that. Once you pick a heater, go to manuf web site and get a PDF of the install directions and check correctness for your application.
