I have to agree with the other reviewers of this product. I purchased ECO wall mount heater for a small upstairs room that sits over the garage, and is usually 5-10°F degrees cooler than the rest of the house. On the second day after I installed it, my daughter said the unit was giving off a funny smell. I checked the unit and saw lightly discolored banding down the middle. I touched it and it was VERY hot, despite the product literature claiming it was touchably warm and safe to touch and paint.
Pros: Wall mountable, low energy use
Cons: Unsafe, overheats, smells, discolors, and generally a poor product. The installation was straight forward for me, but the item is heavy and mounting could be a challenge for those not comfortable using a wall templated, wall anchors, independent post mounts, and the weight of the unit. You need to mount it close to a plug, waist height, and use a thermostatic control (I purchased the LUX WIN100 that the manufacturer recommended). Despite the depiction here, the heater is larger than it appears, and I thought it was ugly as well.
Details:
I took my Black & Decker TLD100 and calibrated it against toaster oven set to 250°F (read 250°F) and a cup of hot water from a temperature select source 192°F (read only 188°F). I then checked the unit, the TLD100 correctly read the room temperature when compared with Lux WIN100 (manufacturer recommended thermostat for the ECO heater) at 69°F. I turned the heater back on, waited about an hour, tested the temperature, and the unit reached a surface temperature of 217.5°F with an air reference temperature at 71°F, far above established Safe Touch Temperatures (STT) and nothing close to "warm touch" as stated by the product literature and not safe for standard wall coverings such as paint and surface markers.
UL and OSHA protective guidelines for contact by unprotected skin:
140°F longer duration, potential burn/skin damage
150°F short duration, potential burn/skin damage
190°F contact burn, scalding
220°F water boils, 3rd degree burns
The unit had a 5 year warranty, but the seller has refund/return policy of 14 days for defects, and a 7 day full refund return policy. As I had only had the unit for 4 days, I contacted seller, Hardware Sales (an Ace Hardware Reseller), to return the item. I included detals of the overheating to 217.5F, foul acrid smell, light cracking along edges, and the light discoloration. I advised the seller that I simply wanted to return the product for a refund, not a replacement, as I felt the product was unsafe. Seller responded with a demand for pictures and stated once they received the pictures "they would let me know their decision." I assumed they misunderstood, as I had only received the unit 4 days prior, and was returning within the 7-day full refund period, and stated that pictures were pointless as the problems was over heating and smell, and I had already fully repacked and sealed the unit for return. They said I could pay for my own return. I filed a complaint with Amazon regarding the purchase, and the BBB and FTC regarding the seller and marketing unsafe products.
Bottom line: This is a faulty product, based on my experience and the reviews, and the seller was both arrogant seller and uncooperative. I would avoid the product and the seller.
